I wanted to take a moment to let you all know about an exciting program that Samuel’s is participating in: the Community Energy Challenge. We are saving a lot of money through energy efficiency improvements here, but they also work with homeowners. Right now the program is specifically looking to work with homeowners in Ferndale and the other small cities of Whatcom County and I wanted to make sure that you all knew that if you own a home here, you are able to participate.

So far the Community Energy Challenge has worked with more than 650 homes in Whatcom County and the results are impressive – the average home is saving more than $450/year in energy costs, and 28 full-time equivalent jobs have been created in our community. This is a real win-win.

Here is how it works:

You sign up to get a home energy assessment, this costs $195.
They give you a comprehensive report on how to save energy that is specific to your home. It helps to prioritize the most cost effective things. It also shows you how you can take advantage of up to $1500 in additional incentives, applicable utility rebates and other credits for each kind of project.
You choose what work, if any, to do. If you choose to do any of the work, the $195 cost of the assessment is credited toward the project.
The work is completed by private contractor.
When the work is done, it is inspected for quality by a third party called the Building Performance Center.

People all over Whatcom County are getting new furnaces or heat pumps, insulating and weatherizing and even installing solar panels. This program was partially enabled by a Federal Grant that Lynden partnered with Ferndale to apply for. I would encourage you to check it out and sign up soon since these funds expire this summer. Don’t just fill your bookshelves with a bunch of books – use the opportunity to create a great looking focal point in your room! Arrange books by size and color to create a cohesive look. Don’t be afraid to stack books vertically as well as horizontally to create some diversity. Accessorize your bookshelf by placing interesting objects (art, ceramics, small statues, etc) intermitently on the shelves. Don’t forget to have fun!

There are volumes written on the subject of color theory, so your choices when it comes to picking out a color scheme for a room in your house may seem rather daunting. The following is one simple method for creating a room with that “pulled together” look.

Step 1) Pick a Pattern
Almost every room has a pattern in it somewhere. It might be in a picture, a rug, the bedspread or on an upholstered piece of furniture. It is much easier to start with the pattern, then to try to find a pattern to fit into a given color scheme later on. From the colors in your pattern, you will create the palette for the room.

Step 2) Choose Three Colors
From within your pattern select three colors; a light color, a medium tone and a darker color. These three colors will form the foundation of your color scheme.

Step 3) Use Your Light Color As The Background
Color your walls and floor with a soft version of your light color. You may choose to “knock it down” with a touch of white or gray if it seems too vivid for use as a background color. It is pleasing to the eye to have your floor color a bit darker than your walls and ceiling. This helps to “ground” the room.

Step 4) Put Your Medium Tone On The Largest Pieces
Window coverings and large furniture pieces will take the mid-tone color – especially if it has a tinge of the wall/floor color mixed into it.

Step 5) Add The Darker Color As An Accent
Now sprinkle in the darker color on the accessories and small furniture pieces. Use these for punch and distribute them evenly throughout the room.

By rotating the three colors you can place a greater emphasis on the background or furniture. Your eye typically will gravitate towards the darker, brighter colors.
